2012 Motion Picture Reel from Andy Sapp on Vimeo.
Where do I even start? This is a project that I have been wanting to do for years. On the surface, it is merely a 3-year montage of footage I have shot using my Canon 7D since diving head-first into the realm of DSLR videography. But I feel strongly, that it is impossible to view this video from the surface. In fact, this video pulls you into the very depths of my heart and soul in ways I never thought possible. I stand strong in my conviction that I have never created anything in my life up to this point that harnesses and exposes that very same unfiltered heart and soul.
Simply stated… this is the most powerful work I have ever created.
This project was an emotional rollercoaster for me to complete. To be totally honest, I never saw myself as any good at shooting video with a DSLR. From Day-1, I have have remained far outside my comfort zone, struggling to navigate this camera for video. Over the past three years I have shot hours upon hours of footage… most of which I take one look at, and write it off as garbage. But what this project aided me in realizing… is that even if there is one good clip amidst hundreds of worthless counterparts, there is still one good clip. And if in that clip, I can successfully capture that raw, human emotion that every photographer lusts after… then that clip is worth it\’s weight in gold. That, to me… is what this reel is. Small candid moments of the human element and the world around me that I was lucky enough to be present for and stamp it in time forever through the lens of my camera.
Gold.
This reel also led me to another artistic revelation, that I do in fact… know what I am doing with a camera. Atop all of this, it triggered hours-upon-hours of self reflection about creativity in general, and where this urge to create comes from… and why I have developed an eye and a skillset for it. Words can\’t really begin to describe what a journey this project has been. Not only on the editing/post production side… but even via the fantastic journeys I have had in my travels along the way. I truly am the luckiest guy on the planet, and I am very thankful that I am able to share my eye with the world.
That being said… I hope you enjoy my reel, and more importantly… a look at something you don\’t get to see everyday.
My heart and soul.
