There are so many reasons I love skateboarding, I could never begin to count the ways… but these videos, to me… illustrate a key factor of that love. Skating is what you choose to make of it. The same can be said for drifting, or even life for that matter… but these two videos are a good example of what I mean.
On one hand, you have this video, Kilian Martin: Altered Route from Brett Novak. The cinematography is as gorgeous and creative as the skating that Kilian is executing. The location is interesting, colorful, and there is a bit of a story/social commentary at play. Creativity all-around from every angle in this video.
On the other hand, DEER MAN OF DARK WOODS from Timebomb Trading Inc. strips skateboarding down to a raw form, filled with grit. Pure aggression. No fancy production, no color. Old fright-films and black metal set the tone for DMODW to destroy these barriers with an overall style that is very distinct.
While both videos feel polar-opposite in just about every sense of the word… in my eyes they share a common thread: making something out of nothing. At the end of the day, a skateboard is just a piece of wood with wheels on it. It is how you choose to approach what you do with that piece of wood that becomes interesting… and it is where you decide to take those things that really becomes something.
